Gas Stoves – What to look for
Lightweight, gas canister stoves are by far the most popular stoves used on a long trek or UL trip. They screw into the fuel canister, quickly boil water, and are simple to operate. Canisters are widely available, especially along rural areas of long-distance walks such as the CDT.
Weight
Weight should be in the range of 1oz/28g to 4oz/113g, with heavier alternatives having more features and more sturdy pot supports.
Pot Stability
The stronger the pot’s support, the sturdier the pot. The majority of stoves are intended for tiny, backpacking-friendly pots of up to 2 litres.
Efficiency/Boil time
Manufacturers claim short boil times; however, this is with the stove on full blast, which uses more fuel. Running the stove at a lower flow rate is typically more fuel-efficient. Some stoves may be set to increase efficiency in low conditions and at high elevations.
